May 2001 marked 20 years since the passage of the Community Dispute Resolution Legislation in New York State, creating the Community Dispute Resolution Centers program (CDRCP). The passage of the legislation in 1981 made New York the first state in the nation to pass mediation legislation with an appropriation to fund existing community mediation centers as well as the establishment of new centers to provide mediation and arbitration services to individuals with minor criminal and civil matters as an alternative to unnecessary costly and lengthy court action. The CDRCP legislation put New York State in the forefront of the community mediation field and set the benchmark and example for other states to follow.
